Since the Kelly Gang siege at Glenrowan, the police have almost universally been blamed for the subsequent death of labourer George Metcalf, who claimed he was struck by a police bullet during the siege and had his medical costs paid by the police.

However, witness statements of the time show that Metcalf was accidentally shot in the face by Ned Kelly before the siege began.

This article by Stuart Dawson shows how a
false view of history and inadequate research wrongly blamed the police for Metcalf's injury.
